Pinellas County Deputy Charged With Domestic Violence

Domestic violence accusations can arise in a variety of situations and can have negative impacts on people who are otherwise upstanding, law abiding citizens in the community. A recent case involving a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office deputy is an example.

According to a February 12, 2021 Tampa Bay News report, the man was arrested over an incident that occurred several days earlier while he was getting ready for his shift. Apparently, the 23-year-old deputy’s girlfriend accused him of infidelity and a fight ensued. The situation quickly escalated into a physical brawl and the officer is alleged to have held the victim against a wall and used handcuffs to restrain her. With her hands locked behind her back, the officer is accused of making her sit on the floor for several minutes while he finished dressing for work. After he left, she reported the incident to the police.

Based on bruising and marks around her wrists, local police investigated. The deputy was arrested the following morning and booked in the county jail. He admits using his handcuffs on the victim and is facing charges of domestic battery and false imprisonment. As a result, he was relieved of his position and placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the case.

Protecting Yourself Against Domestic Violence Charges

Under the Florida Statutes, you can be charged with domestic violence for any type of assault, battery, stalking, or false imprisonment of a family member or anyone living in your home. If convicted, you could face up to a year or more in jail, depending on the situation and the extent of harm done. This is in addition to other penalties, which include fines, court costs, mandatory attendance at anger management or drug and alcohol classes, and requirements to check in with the court regularly. Alongside criminal penalties, domestic violence accusations could result in the loss of your job and could impact your rights in family court hearings.
